Frequently Asked Therapy Questions

At Stone & Sapling, I provide specialized telehealth therapy for young adults across California and Oregon. My practice is designed to support you through the unique "growing pains" of early adulthood.
Our Core Focus Areas:
Life Transitions: Navigating the "in-between" phases—like starting or finishing college, entering the workforce, moving to a new city, or shifting your identity.
Anxiety & Overwhelm: Building a practical toolbox to manage the "spirals" and the pressure of feeling like you should have it all figured out by now.
Confidence & Self-Esteem: Moving from self-doubt to a grounded sense of self-worth. We work on clarifying your values so you can make decisions that actually feel like you.
Boundary Setting: Learning how to protect your energy in relationships, at work, and with family.
Quarter-Life Clarity: Exploring the "who am I?" questions with a mix of clinical strategy and honest, human conversation.
The Format: All services are conducted via a 100% secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. This allows us to meet wherever you feel most grounded—whether that’s your couch, your parked car, or your home office.

It’s completely normal to feel a mix of nerves and "what do I even say?" before your first session. Think of the first few meetings as "The Grounding Phase." We aren’t diving into your deepest secrets in the first ten minutes; we’re just getting to know the landscape of your life.
Here’s the play-by-play:
The "Vibe Check": The consult call is mostly about seeing if we click. I’ll ask about what’s bringing you in right now and what you’ve tried so far. You can ask me questions, too—about my style, my background, or how this all works.
The First Session: You’ll click a secure link from your laptop or phone. No waiting rooms, no clipboards. Just me (and likely a snoring dog in the background) on your screen.
No "Right" Way to Talk: You don’t need a script or a bulleted list of problems. You can show up in your hoodie, with a coffee, and just start where you are. If you get stuck, I’ll help lead the way with questions.
Building the Toolbox: By the end of our first few sessions, we’ll have a rough "map" of your goals. You’ll start to leave sessions not just feeling "heard," but with a small, practical strategy to try out before we meet again.
The Bottom Line: Therapy at Stone & Sapling is a collaboration, not a lecture. You’re the expert on your life; I’m just here to help you navigate the terrain.

1. Is video therapy as effective as meeting in person? Yes. Extensive research shows that for challenges like anxiety, life transitions, and identity exploration, telehealth is just as effective as sitting in the same room. The "work" is in the relationship and the strategies we build together, not the office furniture.
2. What if I’m worried about privacy at home? This is a common concern. Many of my clients get creative: using a pair of headphones, sitting in their car (parked, of course), or even using a white noise machine outside their door. If you can find a quiet spot where you feel safe to speak freely, we can make it work.
3. What happens if the technology glitches? It happens! If we lose our connection, I have a "back-up plan" ready. Usually, we’ll try to reconnect through the secure portal first, and if that fails, we’ll switch to a traditional phone call so your session time isn't wasted.
4. Do I need to download any special apps? Nope. I use a 100% secure, HIPAA-compliant platform through SimplePractice. You’ll receive a unique link for every session: just click it from your phone, tablet, or laptop, and you’re in. No account creation or software downloads required.

If you’ve ever felt like therapy was a one-way street, where you talk and a stranger in a cardigan nods silently, you’re in the right place for something different. I built Stone & Sapling to be the antidote to "stiff" therapy.
1. You are the expert. I’m not here to "fix" you or tell you how to live your life. You are the person who has lived every second of your story. My role is to act as a clinical co-pilot; offering the tools, the perspective, and the grounded space you need to navigate your own path.
2. We speak human, not "clinical." I trade heavy academic jargon for real, honest conversations. We can tackle deep, complex identity work while also having room for humor, a relatable analogy, or a collective sigh when the week has been a lot.
3. Practicality is the priority. Insight is great, but a toolbox is better. We balance deep exploration with "Tuesday Morning" strategies. My goal is for you to leave our sessions with something tangible you can actually use when anxiety hits or a boundary needs to be set.
4. A Grounded Environment. Being a 100% telehealth practice isn't just a convenience; it’s a philosophy. I believe growth happens best when you feel safe and comfortable; whether that’s on your own couch, in your car, or with your pets nearby. (And yes, my "Self-Care Coordinator" dog is usually nearby, too.)
-
Not strictly, but my practice is intentionally designed for the "Sapling" stage of life; typically those in their late teens through their thirties.
My expertise is rooted in the specific chaos of emerging adulthood. If you’re navigating the "Who am I supposed to be?" years, the "Is everyone else faking it?" years, or the "I have a degree but no manual for my nervous system" years; you’re in the right place.
If you’re a bit further along in your journey (a "Sturdy Oak," perhaps?) and my Grounded/Gentle approach still resonates with you, feel free to reach out. We can have a brief chat to see if our "vibes" align.
Frequently Asked Logistical Questions
-
I know that reaching out for help is often the hardest part of the process, so I aim to make the "paperwork side" as simple as possible.
The First Step: We’ll start with a brief, 15-minute consultation (at no cost) to make sure we’re a good fit for one another.
Our Sessions: We’ll meet through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. You’ll have your own client portal where you can handle scheduling, messaging, and paperwork all in one place.
-
Here is what we’ll cover:
A Brief Overview: You can share a little bit about what’s bringing you to therapy right now and what you’re hoping to change.
The Vibe Check: You’ll get a feel for my style and how I communicate to see if it feels like a good "fit" for you.
The Logistics: We can quickly touch on scheduling, fees, and any "how-to" questions you have about using the telehealth platform.
Next Steps: If it feels like a match, we can look at the calendar together. If not, I’m more than happy to provide names of other trusted colleagues who might be a better fit for your specific needs.
-
The Investment: There are two options available. I take several insurances (___). Or if you want to be a private-pay client, which allows us to focus entirely on your goals without the constraints often set by insurance companies. I can provide you with a "Superbill" if you’d like to seek out-of-network reimbursement.
